I am so happy that it’s finally gardening season. Wait scratch that it snowed this morning… I have been prepping my garden beds over the last few weekends, clearing all of the debris. Wow it’s amazing how many leafs, sticks, dog toys and garbage can accumulate when the weather this winter has been so dismal. I got a little stir crazy a couple of weeks ago and started some of my seeds. I hope it wasn’t too early. I think that I started them on February 20th and only the plants that say you can direct sow in April. They are starting to pop up nicely. I planted spinach, peppers, cabbage, broccoli, onions and lettuce.
Last week I came across a few great deals on seeds at Walmart, and wait for it…… The Dollar Store had seeds for $.25 and bulbs for $1. I picked up a few more onion bulbs (I planted seeds before.) Some garlic starts, gladiola bulbs, petunia, daisy, poppy seed, and a few more peppers. I originally went to the Dollar Store for baking trays, to plant my starts in.

Last year I started to make my own seed starter pots out of newspaper. I just can’t believe how incredibly expensive growing a garden can be. I thought gardening was a hobby that was supposed to save you money not break the bank right? This year I have spent $63.30 on gardening so far. I had a lot of seeds left over from last year so here is hoping that they actually grow. I hope to not spend more than $200 this year in the garden and plant department. That’s equivalent to about 3 trips to the produce isle for my family.
I still have a few things that I need to purchase on my list. I would like to make some potato towers this year and grow a few spuds. I will be expanding the garden for my big plants like squash, melon, and pumpkins. The place that I would like to put them is full of weeds, so I need some felt, a few sprinkler parts and maybe some gravel to go over the felt.
